I can feel a good one coming on…
January 17, 2014
If you read my last post, you probably thought my next post would be my last.
Yup. At the time, I thought that too.
Turns out that once the digital ink gets to flowing, however, it’s hard to stop.
Yes, a hiatus is near – but it ain’t here yet. Archie will live to see another week.
So let’s get to work. There is much to be done before this sabbatical begins…
Republican Dillweeds
I know I criticize the Democrats a lot while maintaining that I am NPA (No Party Affiliation).
My critics argue that my voter’s registration card may say NPA but I am obviously a Republican. I will argue that these critics are feeble-minded idiots who can’t imagine the existence of a free-thinking American, unaffected by partisanship, and only interested in keeping our country moving forward. That’s OK. I understand and I respect your handicapped thinking.
Nevertheless, it’s time to set the record straight. It’s absolutely true that when it comes to business and the economy, I lean more toward the Republican way of doing things…and, like Republicans, I am all for less government – less involvement in our everyday lives, fewer laws governing the things that don’t need governing.
I am NPA, however, because I really dislike what our two-party system has turned into and the incredible division that it has caused in our country. It is a deep chasm that continues to grow and further divide our people and our politicians, and makes it increasingly more difficult for our government to act in a unified manner to further the interests of our country.
I know, I know… You’ve heard this all before. But here’s what you haven’t heard…
I truly believe that, of our two political parties, the Republican Party is the more fucked-up of the two. And if I was to join either of the “big two” political parties today, it would definitely be the Republican Party – because they need me more than the Democrats. You see, many people might join a party today so that they can feel at home and partake in the camaraderie. Not me. I have enough friends and comrades. I would never join a party just to vote according to the party line but so that I could try and effect change within that party…and again, today, the Republicans need me way more than the Democrats.
First of all, the Republican Party has allowed itself to be hijacked by these far right thinkers who want to push their agenda on everyone and are willing to bring our country to a halt in order to get their way. At least the Democrats are a whole lot more “live and let live”. Yes, there are equally radical Democrats out there but at least they were smart enough to not create a stupid “sub-party” to stand out and highlight their stubborness and ignorance. The Republican Party excels at ignorance and I am sick and tired of their collective narrow-minded views. It borderlines on disgusting.
Although the examples are numerous, let’s discuss this one…
Immigration Reform
Seldom do I side with Democrats on business issues…but that’s exact what this is. First and foremost, it’s a business issue, followed by a “doing what makes sense” issue. Of course, the far right that has hijacked the Republican party is way too blind to see this.
When you try and talk to the average Repub about some of the proposed immigration changes, they will, without listening, say…
- let’s just enforce our current laws
- no amnesty for anyone, just deport these law-breakers
- no immigration changes, let people use the existing procedures to immigrate legally
I absolutely agree that we should enforce current laws…and we do. Illegal immigrants are deported all the time – probably daily. No one is saying that current laws shouldn’t be enforced until they are changed. The problem is that we can’t deport all illegal immigrants. There are two basic reasons for this. The first is manpower. It is estimated that we have about 11 million illegal immigrants in the US. 11 million! Does anyone have any idea how many immigration agents it would take and how much money it would cost to deport 11 million people? Lots!
The reality is that, it’s just like speeding. The cops can’t catch everyone who speeds.
You… Reading this… I bet you sped yesterday. You, law breaker, you!
But the cops can’t catch everyone. No enough manpower.
So, just like speeding, the people who get caught, get caught and get deported.
We do, in fact, enforce our current laws…but “deport them all” just can’t be done.
The next, more intangible, reason why we can’t deport all 11 million illegal immigrants is because we need them. Most of these people aren’t here mooching off America. They are here working, earning money to support their families. And guess what? They are doing jobs that Americans don’t want. Argue that point all you want… Then find me even a dozen Americans who want to spend their day in a field picking oranges for minimum wage… I dare you.
So here’s what this amnesty idea does… Suddenly, we would have a lot less law-breakers. I equate this to raising the speed limit (on certain roads), instead of just giving out more tickets. By granting these people amnesty, we also get to know who they are and we get to collect income tax from them. Note: Most of these people already pay taxes in the form of sales tax and, even when they rent a place to live, they contribute to property taxes…but they are usually skating free on income taxes – unlike you and me. Plus, all of these American employers, who were also lawbreakers, stop being lawbreakers. All of this is good for America and good for business. Are we sure Democrats came up with this?
So what about the idea of deporting these people and letting them immigrate legally, under current laws? Well… Currently, the United States has a quota on how many people can legally immigrate to our country every year. The number is something like 675K and some of those might be reserved for families… i don’t know the details. Look it up. But I know that employment based immigration is capped at something like 140,000 visas and, of course, there are all sorts of exceptions, limitations, etc…
So it sounds like we have a good program going, right?
Here’s the thing that very few people will tell you…
“No more than 7 percent of the visas may be issued
to natives of any one independent country in a fiscal year.”
So, taking the higher number of 675,000, this means that no more than 47,250 people can legally immigrate into the US from any one country. Check it…
http://www.uscis.gov/tools/glossary/country-limit
This means that if we deported 1 million Mexican workers, under the current, ridiculous, immigration laws, it would take us over 21 years to get them all back. On the other hand, the entire population of Liechtenstein (39,000) could move here next year and still not a single orange would get picked from the groves. Does this make any sense to anyone?
Bottom line: Yes – let’s enforce current laws until we change them but let’s change them soon.
The ones that are in-place are old, outdated and some just don’t make any sense.
Just like the Republican politicians that support them.
Hey… Who is that guy?
No. That’s neither a young Axl Rose nor an Axl Rose wannabe.
Although, let’s face it…we’re all Axl Rose wannabees.
And who is this guy…
Nope. It’s not Jesus and it’s not some guy from Duck Dynasty.
These two guys are from a Southern Rock, Country, Hair Band that I recently discovered
called Blackberry Smoke. i don’t know why but, I really like these guys. If only they
were hot chicks, I would have Barnsley look up their names.
Nevertheless, you guessed it…
They are this week’s musical guest. So let’s give a listen to their song: Good One
I think everyone can see why I would love that video… Yes?
It’s a somewhat rock song, somewhat about drinking and it somewhat mentions hot chicks.
What’s not to like?
And speaking of hot chicks…
Where did Ashley Monroe come from?
I can feel a good one coming on…
What? I was just still singing that song.
So there I was one day, watching Willie Nelson, in my hat and newly refurbished boots, when ***bam!***, the hottest chick on television (since the new Wendy’s girl) comes out of nowhere and starts singing with 80-year old Willie. Really… Who is this non-redhead?
Ya… I don’t know either. I’m having the research department look into this.
Also, I was going to play a video… Yes, a second musical guest but we’re out of time.
So, we’ll bring her back another day. In the meantime, here’s another photo…
Is anyone else thinking thigh turkey?
By the way, thanks to everyone who sent me photos of thigh turkeys.
Example:
Of course, there’s really something wrong with you.
Why are you sending me these photos and who is letting you do this to them?
Repeatedly?
I want answers. Weirdo.
Hmmm… Is that everything? Alrighty then. Time to go.
Time to go do whatever it is that I do when I’m not doing this.
I forgot myself… Would you please remind me?
This isn’t cheesecake!
Wow. I really gotta go.
See you muthas lay-tah… Peace!

When you make love…
August 10, 2012
Do you look in the mirror?
Who do you think of?
Does he look like me?
…or does he look like this guy?
That’s right. It’s the start of The Archie Revolution.
We’ll get to that in a minute.
First, I heard that someone read my blog and said to themselves, “Ugh… What a Republican.” OK look. You don’t have to like my stuff but there’s no need for insults.
That is the #1 problem with our country’s dual party system. It keeps us divided. It creates an “us vs. them” mentality. You automatically believe that every person is either with you or they are against you. This adversarial mentality is what prevents our country from moving forward. It’s what prevents our cars from getting 70 miles per gallon. It’s the reason that we continue to have politicians who are bought in a political auction, instead of actual elected officials.
I’m not on the left or on the right side of the room. I’m standing outside the building, wondering how to burn it down and build a spherical room that has no left side or right side.
Just because I don’t like the way the Democratic Party rolls, doesn’t make me a Republican. Although, I will say that most of the Republican’s bullshit is easier for me to ignore, but that’s a topic for another time. Here’s my best analogy… You think that because I don’t like chocolate ice cream, I must like vanilla ice cream. But you’re wrong. Dead wrong.
Now you’re probably thinking, “Oh… I bet he’s going to say he likes Strawberry ice cream.” Wrong again. Do you know what my favorite ice cream flavor in the whole world is?
It’s Bryers Checkered Flag. You know why? Because it’s the perfect blend of Bryers Natural Vanilla and Chocolate. AND it’s not split down the middle. There’s no competition between the flavors. It’s in balance. It works.
Be open-minded. Try Bryers Checkered Flag Ice Cream. It’s delicious.
This is what we need in Washington. We need a political party that looks like Bryers Checkered Flag Ice Cream, the perfect balance of the best ideas from both parties in a non-adversarial blend that eventually melts a little and turns into something even better after only a short time.
This is the perfect time to return to… The Archie Revolution.
I bet most of you thought that I took last week off just to goof around. Not the case. I was working. I was thinking. I’ve been giving a lot of thought to this idea of a new political party and what it should look like. Here’s what I came up with, in what I am calling…
The Coalition Movement Manifesto
Not A Party
To start with, it can’t be a political party – not yet. You see, right now, if you aren’t either a Democrat or a Republican, you don’t have a prayer at being taken seriously, much less of winning an election. Most of the alternative political parties get started, a handful of people join, and then they fizzle out into obscurity. We don’t want to do that. Therefore, we all need to remain Democrats and Republicans for now. If you’re a member of some of other party, that’s OK too. In fact, you probably understand the challenges better than most. So, for now, let’s just call it a politcal movement.
Not A Disguise
Another thing that our movement cannot be, is a disguise for an existing party. Let’s take the Tea Party, for example. They aren’t a real political party. When you are asked to register to vote, you can’t pick “Tea”. The so-called Tea Party, complete with its stupid name, is really just a subgroup of Republicans who tend to lean further to the right than most. We don’t want to be anything like that.
Focus on Unity Not Division
I truly believe that America’s political system , today, is designed to divide us instead of unite us. The only thing that this division accomplishes is that it keep the politicians in power and prevents us from properly addressing our country’s real challenges. Let’s get back to the things that “we the people” actually want from government. Let’s stop talking about all the issues that shouldn’t have anything to do with politics. Let’s unite our citizens on common ground, instead of dividing them on the issues that we’ll never agree on. This should be pretty easy. Most of what we want is right there in the bill of rights.
Speaking of unity… There are a whole bunch of small political parties out there who agree on many of our ideas. As the party of consolidation and unity, maybe we should be looking to bring a number of those together? Oh, yeah.
Freedom and Justice For All
When our country was founded, it was launched under the precepts of freedom – freedom of speech, freedom of religion and, by defacto, freedom from religion. Our founding fathers (and mothers) wanted this to be a country where people would not be persecuted for the words they spoke or for what they believed. In essence, if you don’t like what someone else has to say, too bad. They have the right to say it. Today’s era of political correctness really seems to supress our freedom of speech. I don’t like it. Similarly, if someone is doing something that seems to go against your religion but it’s OK with others – that should be your clue. That must be an area that lawmakers shouldn’t be involved in. You don’t get to push your political agenda onto others. You have to respect their freedom of religion. Personal freedoms run long and deep, I could go on and on.
This includes things like same-sex marriages. Government shouldn’t regulate who can and who can’t get married, and you shouldn’t care if your neighbor wants to marry a man or a woman. If you’re a guy and you’re against gay marriage, then don’t marry another guy. That was easy. But remember, your neighbor still deserve his version of life, liberty and the pursuit of (his) happiness.
So does that sound like I am pro-gay marriage?
I wouldn’t say that I am pro-gay marriage. I wouldn’t marry another guy.
But also, I am not against it. I am pro-YOU marrying whoever YOU want to marry.
Now are you getting me? Bryers Checkered Flag Ice Cream.
Same goes for things like abortion. You don’t believe in abortion – don’t have one, but don’t go around telling women what they can or can’t do with their bodies. That’s not for you to decide and, again, government should not be involved in this. I think it’s personal and “choice” should be protected under freedom of religion or, maybe, as I like to say, freedom from religion.
I think you get my point.
The Removal of Money From Politics
One of the biggest obstacles gridlocking American politics and preventing our country from properly addressing our challenges is money in politics and the fact that today’s elected officials are basically bought in a political auction. It has been shown over and over again that over 95% of the time, the politician with the most money wins. Big money comes into these political campaigns from large corporations, banks, and other special interest groups and then those contributors basically own that candidate. Right now this is almost impossible to stop. It can’t happen voluntarily. If a politican stopped playing the game, he/she would surely lose the next election and become totally ineffective. Our only hope is to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision (Citizen’s United) that essentially declared, “corporations are people” and that giving money is the same as voicing your opinion. Therefore, large corporations making enormous political contributions is protected under freedom of speech. Isn’t that just crazy?
Freedom of Speech is for people, not corporations.
Eventually, we need to reverse Citizen’s United and pass a constitutional amendment that gets the money out of politics. Until then, big banks, big oil companies, big government contractors and other big corporations will continue to make big dollars, decide which fuels power our cars, decide how much gas mileage we get, and get bailed out when they make giant mistakes, while the average American continues to get screwed and pay way too much for things.
Transparency
We need to operate transparently. We can’t have secret meetings or closed door strategy sessions. There is enough secrecy in today’s politics and government to flood the planet. We need to be the opposite of that. We need to tell the people of The United States what we’re thinking. We need to tell them what we’re going to do. Then we need to do it. It’s that simple.
Although not a member, I recently attended a Rotary Club meeting. One of the concepts that I’ve always liked about Rotary is their 4 way test. They say to always ask yourself the following questions of the things you think, say or do…
- Is it the truth?
- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Good stuff. Our movement needs to be similar. I’ll say..
- Is it good for America?
- Does it help America’s economy?
- Is it good for the majority of Americans?
- Does it help to restore confidence in America?
Go ahead… Add you own.
Americans First
This leads us to the concept of “Americans First”. We need to put the interest of the average American citizen first, the 99% – not the 1%. We need to focus on the things that are good for the average American then America, as whole, not just what’s good for our oil companies, banks or government contractors. The 99% aren’t here to feed the 1% or be taken advantage of by them.
America Must be Self-Sufficient
Americans don’t want to send their money overseas but today, we have become overly dependant on everyone else. We power our automobiles on fuels that we cannot provide 100% domestically. We look to China to produce many of our goods, and India to provide us with inexpensive labor. What would the unemployment rate look like if we started producing everything here and started hiring everyone we needed here – even if it cost a little more? And what if we found an alternate fuel source – here, and demanded cars that ran on our domestic fuel source. And how many jobs might that create? And how could it positively affect our $500 Billion per year trade deficit?
The bottom line here is that we need to create more from less, we need to be self-sustainable, and we need to be the best at everything we do . Again, America needs to be self-sufficient and this self-suffieciancy needs to be a core value of our platform.
A Hand-Up for Those in Need – Not Socialism
One of the hardest things for us to overcome, as either a political movement, party or just as everyday citizens, will be our natural propensity to become overly radical in our deepest beliefs. For example, it’s easy to classify any kind of assistance as socialism. We don’t want socialism and we don’t want to promote socialistic behavior. When you reward people for not working, it gives them little incentive to be productive and it encourages others around them to follow in those footsteps – just look at Detroit.
That said, this is America and our least fortunate citizens shouldn’t be living in third-world conditions, unless it is their choice to live that way. We shouldn’t have citizens without food and shelter, again, unless they choose to live that way. The plan, however, needs to be a hand-up – not a hand-out. There’s a big difference between a hand-up and a hand-out. Except for those who simply can not take care of themselves, we should only be assisting those who are in genuine need of help and wanting to become, or return to being, a productive citizen. Assistance along these lines would only make all of us and our country stronger. This is a tricky subject. We’ll figure it out.
Healthcare
This is America and we’ve already covered that America needs to be #1. That includes Healthcare. I don’t have the answers for how we’re going to do this but I know the end goal.
In America, everyone should get the best care possible, regardless of their income or ability to pay. Healthcare needs to stop being about the money. It also needs to stop being run like most of our airlines. When you fly somewhere, the price you pay seems to have little to do with the airline’s actual cost of delivering you from one place to another. It’s some arbitrary number. Sometime flying to NYC cost $180 round-trip, at other times it’s $460. I have to think that it always costs that airline the same to fly me there and back.
Similarly, when you go to a hospital, 100 games are played. You get all sorts of bills, then the insurance company starts playing their game, and at the end of the day, doctors can barely afford to make their car payments these days. The whole thing is ridiculous and can not continue.
Again, in America, everyone deserves to be healthy and to have access to the best possible healthcare. I’ll say it again – regardless of their income or ability to pay. Do you know why? Because this is America and that’s how we roll. “Never leave your wingman” translates to “never leave your fellow America during his/her time of need”.
Someone tell me how we do this?
Work in Progress
These are all just a few of my ideas. It’s a work in progress.
I welcome your ideas.
But again – I really think that America needs to abandon this very unproductive Democrats vs. Republicans mentality. These aren’t football teams and election day isn’t the Superbowl. We need to think outside the box. We need better, more intelligent choices. We need to demand better and more intelligent choices.
And that, my friends, is The Coalition Movement Manifesto.
And the start of The Archie Revolution.
Finito!
That’s it. That’s all I have today.
What?
Oh, Barnsley thinks we should do the redhead of the week.
Actually, that sounds like fun. Get it? “Do” the… OK, nevermind.
Sometime the Beavis & Butthead in me just jumps out and dances across the floor.
Here’s you go, Barnsley. I think you’re going to like her…
Wow. There should be a “like” button around here somewhere. I started to say, “Wow… I’d like to hit her like button” but I didn’t want to get labeled as a Democrat. 🙂
OK, gotta run…
Thanks for reading.
And as always, be a lover – not a hater.
See ya, wouldn’t wanna be ya…
Love yous, anyway…

To thine own self be true…
August 12, 2011
Before moving on to this week’s topic, “Connections”.
I wanted to take a moment and address one comment that was recently sent my way. I was told that, based on my political commentary of last week, it was difficult to place me. Someone asked how I could possibly be pro-choice and yet be “OK” with gay marriage.
Your ignorance astonishes me. Seriously… Have you stopped to think about this? Those two aren’t even related. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. It’s like asking, how could you like Pizza and yet be OK with having a cheeseburger (now and then). The only way those topics are related is through either religion or through political association. Well… 1) Aren’t we supposed to keep religion out of our lawmaking. That’s what supports Freedom of Religion and makes our laws mostly acceptable to most religions. 2) I refuse to let the political party system affect the way I think.
“I’m an athiest. I swear to God.”
You see, I am for personal freedom. That’s what this country was supposed to be all about. That’s why people came from Europe to the New World, to get away from dictatorships and live in a place where “We the People” ruled. I will always support your personal freedom, as long as it doesn’t interfere with my personal freedom (or that of others). You want to have an abortion? Go for it. You want to get married? Why do I care? Enuff said.
By the way, I’m not really an athiest. In general, believe in intelligent design. But my religion is mine. My religion doesn’t dictate that I should save others or get anyone else to see things my way…and it doesn’t skew my views on how we should be running our country.
Now, I’m done talking politics.
Although not before revealing my new thing…
OK, let’s get to this week’s topic: Connections
This week I’d like to raise a virtual glass to all the great connections that I’ve made in my life. Although I have been blessed by many connections, I realize that true connections are rare. Every once in a while, someone unexpectedly enters your life and you just seem to connect with them? These are usually far and few between. They just sort of happen. Some of these connections last forvever. Others, unfortunately, have a limited lifetime.
Sometimes you connect with an artist through their music, someone you’ve never met before but that connection is still there. I just recently connected to this artist, Christina Perri. At first, I wasn’t sure if I liked her voice. Now I can’t stop listening to it, particularly this song…
Note: I think this song is better if you don’t watch the video.
In college, I made a great connection named Dana. She was awesome, although tremendously quirky. Dana loved tools, like wood working tools or mechanics tools. Her sheets and pillow covers had to be satin. Dana never attended weddings because too often they would take place in a church. She didn’t like churches. I once asked Dana if she was a witch. She responded with, “why… are you a warlock?”
Dana planned to not marry. In fact, when we last discussed it, she had planned to not have sex. Her theory was that people should not get overly involved with each other… emotionally or physically. She said that if you let a person take your mind, then they would take your body, and then your life. She became very serious when she talked about these things. Ironically, some time after telling me this, Dana settled down with a permanent boyfriend. Soon after, they married. Soon after, Dana passed away.
She was a fast machine
She kept her motor clean
She was the best damn woman I had ever seen
Did I mention that Dana was a huge AC/DC fan?
Then there are my Amigos. How long have we known each other? It seems like just the other day, we decided that every two years we were going to get together for an Amigos trip. And, even if every Amigo didn’t always make it, we’ve managed to keep our schedule. By the way, the decision to have an Amigos trip every two years came after we’d known each other for over 15 years and, guess what? That was (almost) 10 years ago! Time absolutely flies and even though we don’t talk that often, I feel just as connected to you three as always. I’m really looking forward to spending a few days together, later this year.
But I particularly want to raise that virtual glass to my private connections. Those who I have connected with and, at the end of the day, it’s just between us. Some of those connections are among the best. You are what I call my F-POPs (Favorite People on the Planet). This includes the people I talk to everyday, who make my life a little brighter. This includes the people I’d like to talk to everyday but maybe it just isn’t in the cards these days. This includes the people I never talk to, and maybe only see once (or twice) per year.
This includes the people who know I love to sail, so they take me sailing… 🙂
This includes the people I used to talk to everyday and now I haven’t seen in a long time…but the connection is still there. You now who you are.
At times I’ve connected with people and, for years, I was unable to figure out the friendship. But there’s always a purpose to the connection. Sometimes it’s the connection itself. Other times a connection is there, just to connect you to someone else.
Everyone… Think about this. Who are your best friends today? How did you get to be best friends with those people, as opposed to the countless others with whom you only randomly associate? This holds true for friendships, relationships, even music or your favorite artists, or your favorite bartender. It’s all about making that connection.
Of course, there are connections that break or fade over time or distance.
(Hopefully never over politics… ) What can you do?
So to all those great connections out there, Past, Present & Future, let us raise that glass and throw one back together. You are my peeps, you continue to shape my life, and I love you all.
May I recommend a…

Now, you should each, individually take a moment and acknowledge all of your connections. Screw Facebook… Pick up the phone, make a call! Take a picture, have it professionally printed at Walgreen’s, and send it to a friend via the U.S. Mail with a handwritten note.
Now you’re cooking with gas!
And that concludes our broadcast day, live from somewhere in the Atlantic.
Don’t worry. I’ll be back to me usual pointless banter soon enough.
Cheers
– Arch
